What are you doing?

I wanted to do a piece that was pertinent to contemporary events, especially the ongoing coronavirus crisis. I wanted to focus on the positive rather than negative, so I decided to do a time-intensive piece focused entirely on thanking health heroes.

How are you doing it?

After initially researching Chuck Close and his grid drawing style, my research then led me to Georges Seurat and the pointillism technique. I did an initial sketch in pencil (which had to be entirely dots, of course) and carefully mapped out where I would want each color to be. I also have depicted the Superman “S” logo on the nurse’s mask, because while Superman, Batman, and Spiderman are all fiction, these healthcare professionals are real-life heroes that deserve to wear such a symbol.

Why? and Why now?

Doctors, nurses, med students, and more have been thrust into a global pandemic and are working tirelessly to, essentially, save our society. In times like these a little bit of moral support can go a long way, and I wanted to do my part – while still at home, of course.
